The Story Behind Hope for a Single Mom
Brevard County Residents have joined forces with Sisters Donna Sullivan and Denise More to help local single mothers fight their battle with Breast Cancer.
Hope for a Single Mom began 2 years ago when Denise More was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Denise was a single mother working full time upon her diagnosis. To battle the disease, Denise had to undergo a double mastectomy with reconstructive surgery which required many weeks of recovery; and time off of work resulting in lost income. During Denise’s battle, her sister Donna Sullivan took over her finances and was shocked as to how hard it was to get the bill collectors to work with her on getting her sisters bills paid. “I had never thought about it before until it hit in my own back yard, but when a single mom is diagnosed she is the only income coming into the home.”
Donna teamed up with the girls in her Mary Kay Unit selling lots of lipsticks and donating part of the profits to help Denise keep her home and her car. When others in Brevard caught wind of this, they started stepping up and asking how they could help. Banning together as a community, over $5000 was raised and given to Denise at the Melting Pot in a ceremony where the money was counted directly into her hand. Denise said it was the most unbelievable feeling to know others cared that much to help her stay in her home, and she vowed to her sister to beat her cancer and pay it forward to another Local Single mom.
The single mother is selected with care by Donna, Denise and their friends at Breast Friends of Florida. Breast Friends, a not for profit organization, is located in Brevard County and is dedicated to improving the quality of life for women with breast cancer and other related women’s cancers. Hope for a Single Mom is has partnered with Breast Friends and keeps their focus on giving HOPE to our Single Moms here in Brevard.
Last year the single mom fund recipient was Delcia Fisher. Denise and Donna teamed up with many Brevard residents raising over $7000. In a ceremony that will now be a tradition to Hope for a Single Mom, the proceeds were counted directly into the hands of Dee and her family at the Melting Pot. Delcia and her Family said it was an event they will never forget, and her son commented that he couldn’t believe so many strangers could be so nice to people they don’t even know.
Delcia and Denise are already hard at work with an even larger team of Brevard friends and business to pay it forward in 2012. The goal is to help not just one, but several single moms. This year they have teamed up with Professional Wrestling Star Devon Hughes in a family friendly event: Body Slammin’ Breast Cancer.
