Time is More Than Money
Like many young professionals, Karen and her husband Don moved to the area based on a decision that centered on family. In this case, it was so her husband could assist his family in the operation of their business, Coleman Glass in Melbourne. Karen continued an hour-and-a-half commute from south Florida until she found the right career opportunity here in Brevard. Now she feels a connection to the area and loves it.
“Coming from south Florida, it was so lovely to feel the warmth of Brevard residents – people actually greet you and smile,” Karen says. “Our beaches are phenomenal and our parks are great.”
The couple will celebrate their 15th anniversary in December and have two children – Samuel, 9 and Gabriela, 6. So how does the busy mother balance her family’s schedule?
“My mother – who was a mother, physician and great humanitarian – was the ultimate balancer; she taught me to sit down on Sunday evenings, look at my week and plan. I plan meals for the week, balance schedules and coordinate activities. I am also very blessed that my in-laws live four houses away. My mother-in-law goes above and beyond in helping with the kids.”
She also encourages young professionals to invest their time prudently. “Be wise in what you choose to do with your time. You will be approached by charities, groups, and churches – so make sure you believe in what you are supporting. It makes it easier to give time if it is heartfelt.”
