We Looked, We Found, We Responded
Programs for Community Based Organizations
Quick background – LEAD Brevard, with Brevard County as a partner, received a federal grant last year resulting in the development of Service Leadership Brevard (SLB), a leadership and capacity building series of training, relationship strengthening and collaborative planning for Community Based Organizations (CBO’s) and local government to work together to address the broad economic recovery issues in Brevard.
Each CBO participating in SLB has completed an organizational needs assessment, as the results of those assessments help guide the curriculum of SLB. Assessments were conducted in the areas of organizational development, program development, collaboration and community engagement, leadership development and evaluation of effectiveness – all best practices areas for CBO’s.
What We Found
Based on the initial assessments we found the top needs of our communities CBO’s are: Marketing/Fund Development; Networking/Professional Development; Technology; Human Resources (relating to volunteer recruitment, training and engagement); and Governance (related to engaging board members and defined roles, as well as formalized board/volunteer training and orientation). Also on the list, the assessments indicate great need related to fundraising and plans to engage in strategic fundraising.
We want to share some good news with you….and an opportunity for you and the CBO that you may work with or serve as a board member. Through the grant award, LEAD Brevard is able to bring national subject matter experts to our community – to help with these key issues and to help our local CBO partners be more successful in delivery of their missions. We know many Spacecoast Business readers serve as board members in our community and we are extending a complimentary offer to you to join us in October for a session on “Millennial Donors” and “Board Development and Governance” in November.
Finding the Funds
“Millennial Donors” presented by Derrick Feldmann of Achieve (Indianapolis IN) will bring information about understanding the characteristics of millennial donors; how to build a campaign to attract them; what ‘wrong’ assumptions we may be making about millennial donors and how best to engage them. The philanthropic investments of the next generations are critical to the long-term success of our community.
In November, Chuck Loring (Fort Lauderdale, FL) will be in Brevard to share a day of tips and strategy for board development and board fundraising. Many of our CBO’s, and maybe the one on which you serve, know of the challenges regarding fundraising and board and staff relationships. Mr. Loring, is a senior governance consultant for BoardSource, providing nonprofit governance consulting with a particular expertise in the board’s role in fundraising. Isn’t that a topic at most of your board meetings?
It’s For You!
As a board member or as a member of the CBO community, these two conversations will help you bring key information back to your organization. And…there is no charge to attend!
More information about these two community sessions will be posted on LEAD Brevard’s website at www.leadbrevard.org or call 632-8222.
