If you were assigned the task of writing about Alpizar Law, LLC, you would start with John Alpizar being sworn into practice by the Honorable Clarence Johnson in 1978. You would also probably write about the firm’s specialty of injury cases related to motor vehicles and touch on the fact John Alpizar has represented all that is law in Brevard for 40 years. You would write about the firm being well-respected by its peers and the public it serves …but you would miss the story of the family behind the firm.
Alpizar Law has become more than even John Alpizar had ever hoped when he opened the business’ doors. It has turned into the family law firm he never expected. Talk to him about this and you will see him beam with pride and satisfaction.
The senior Alpizar said, “Lawyers and law firms from outside the area advertise they’re a local law firm because they have an office in the county or they’re trial lawyers. We know we’re Brevard County’s law firm. Not that we limit our work to Brevard County, but we take great pride in Brevard County. We’re trial lawyers who likely try more cases in this community than any other law firm and will continue to do so for those who need us.”
The Third Alpizar Joins the Firm
Scott Alpizar was born and raised in Brevard, went to high school at Holy Trinity and was off to Harvard for his undergraduate degree. An MBA brought him back to Florida State University, after which he worked in corporate finance for a few years in Jacksonville for a Fortune 100 company. He then enrolled in law school at Florida International, and as he said, “graduated as quickly as I could to get back to the family business.”
“I’ve been practicing law since 2016 but started here in 2015 before I passed the Bar. I’m the young one on the block,” he said. “I came back because I was bored with what I was doing and wanted to practice law. Being able to work with my family and to be back in Brevard County was what I was hoping for. My wife is from this area as well, so it was good for us to come back home.”
David Alpizar Weighs In
“With each of us coming from different backgrounds, we can take a collective approach to each case,” said David Alpizar. “We offer the experiences of our various backgrounds to help decide or figure out issues for any given client. We plan strategies that always have two or now three sets of eyes on every case. I joined the firm in 2007, and it’s definitely a different dynamic now. The focus is still the same, the commitment is still the same, and our desire to help the people of Brevard is still the same, but we’re building the next generation. It’s exciting; it’s the face of our future.”
For John, after 40 years of practice in Brevard County, having his sons join the firm was a high point of his career and the biggest compliment he could receive. He never expected his sons would be with the firm because it was not something the family sat around the table talking about.
“It was quite the rewarding
day when David approached me and said he wanted to come back to Brevard,” said John.
“I spent a lot of time trying to talk him out of it because professionally I wanted him to explore every option he could.”
“We’re all dedicated to doing the best job we can for the people we represent.”
David believes it helps that they all genuinely enjoy what they are doing and are helping people. For David, it does not feel like work when sitting around the dinner table talking about a case or issue. Scott agrees: “Until our respective wives tell us to change the subject, or we start getting that look, we like talking about work. We also have a lot of similar hobbies and interests. We all like being outdoors, playing golf, and also enjoy boating and fishing. We like being together at work and at play.”
The Alpizars and The Community
Brevard residents see the family’s community engagement most visibly through their holiday turkey giveaway, which is coming up on its sixth year. It is a great way to kick off the holiday season, and as Thanksgiving approaches, many families are faced with the prospect of struggling to make ends meet while trying to provide a holiday meal for their children. The Alpizars offer one free turkey to any family in need and will probably give away 700 this year.
David serves on the board for Operation Hope based in Fellsmere, as well as three professional boards; the Brevard County Bar Association, Central Florida Trial Lawyers Association and as the immediate past president of the Vassar B. Carlton American Inn of Court.
John has served on the Brevard County Bar Foundation, is past-president of the American Board of Trial Advocacy, Central Florida Division, and is just finishing his sixth and final year as the representative of the Florida Governors of the Florida Bar for the 18th Circuit, representing Seminole and Brevard counties. “When Michael Kahn was president of the Brevard Bar Foundation, he came to me needing funds for various programs,” said John. “In response to that need, we created the O. John Alpizar Endowment Fund, and I made a substantial contribution to get it off the ground. I continue to fund it annually and also encourage other lawyers in the community to contribute, as well.”
As for Scott, he has only been back in town for a couple of years and is just starting to get established in the community. He serves on the Young Lawyers Division Board of the Brevard County Bar Association and is trying to get exposure to other organizations.
“Obviously, it’s important we build a legacy,” said John. “We’re all dedicated to doing the best job we can for the people we represent, and that includes primarily injured victims of accidents due to the carelessness and negligence of someone else. These people need help getting through their difficult times and, in most cases, getting through the rest of their lives.
When I started in 1978, it was expected you would give back to your community and to the profession. That has stayed with me all these years, and it’s something I’ve encouraged David and Scott to do as well.”
