A Harris employee volunteer effort that began in 2002 with backpacks of school supplies for students in a single classroom has become a company-wide program that delivered 865 backpacks to Brevard County Schools this year for students in need. The effort also resulted in enough surplus supplies for 100 teachers. The annual program is the flagship campaign of the Harris HEROs – Harris Employees Reaching Out. This non-profit, volunteer organization, staffed by Harris employees and retirees, coordinates the distribution of supplies and equipment to public and private schools in the county based on requests from guidance counselors and teachers. Shown here are the 70 volunteers who helped fill the backpacks at Harris’ Government Communications Systems facility in Melbourne.
