Q and A

NAME: Michelle Irwin

TITLE: Director of Communications/PIO, Brevard Public Schools

MARRIED:

Yes, to Dan Irwin

CHILDREN:

Three of the best: Danielle (22), her husband Matt Steiner (25), Shane (20), and Shannon (17)

YEARS IN BREVARD:

I moved here from Michigan in mid-July.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR JOB?

I love working in the community to support families.  I believe my primary function is to support our schools by providing excellence in communications.  This might be through process improvement, media relations, crisis situations, program enhancement, and information sharing.  I am particularly impressed with the committed people I’ve met who collaborate to offer the best possible educational opportunities for students.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

I think my biggest challenge is learning about the community while trying to serve it.  In particular, while educational policies and procedures are very similar from district to district, I’m still in the learning curve regarding Florida’s and BPS’s policies and procedures.

WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO ON YOUR IPOD?

I love contemporary worship music, specifically Chris Tomlin and Hillsong.  I’ve also been converted to country music, and when I’m working on big projects I love to listen to Il Divo.

WHO DO YOU ADMIRE AND WHY?

I admire the unsung heroes who sacrifice so much with little recognition or reward.  People who serve in the military or on the mission field inspire me and challenge me to be a better person.

WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU HAD MORE TIME FOR NOW?

Volunteering in my church.

WHAT IS ONE THING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?

I like to sing Karaoke!

IF YOU COULD TRADE PLACES WITH ANY OTHER PERSON FOR A WEEK WHO WOULD IT BE?

For fun, I would have to pick Wonder Woman.  I mean, who wouldn’t want to look like her and have superpowers?  On a serious note, I would probably say one of our Supreme Court justices as I’ve always been fascinated with the law.
