Space Coast Cancer Center (SCCC) has been providing cancer care to Brevard County since 1983. With locations in Titusville, Merritt Island and Viera, SCCC offers comprehensive infusion therapy (chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immune therapy, biologic, etc) radiation therapy, laboratory services, CAT scan and Pet/CT.
As a patient financial coordinator at SCCC, Tina Norman is passionate about being “the voice” for patients in light of the huge gap in the insurance industry. “Dealing with the big insurance companies and their policy changes can be challenging. Patients pay a lot of money for health insurance that they think provides them coverage, and then their insurance refuses to cover cancer treatment. I see this day in and day out, and I absolutely love going to bat for them,” she commented.
Every day, Norman meets with all of SCCC’s new patients and provides financial counseling to both insured and self-pay patients regarding their health care coverage, long and short term disability, and COBRA. She also does the cost analysis on chemotherapy drug treatment plans and tries to find grants with pharmaceutical companies for patients who may need financial assistance and/or or drug replacement programs, based on availability, diagnosis of the patient, and clinical guidelines.
“For me, my biggest inspiration has been the patients. Just knowing that you have made someone’s life a little easier keeps you going,” she said.
In addition to her position at SCCC, she is the president of the Space Coast Cancer Foundation, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization devoted to its mission of providing need based support to ease the financial burden of any cancer patient in Brevard County. She is also a member of the board of directors for the Sharing Center of Central Brevard and serves as a S.H.I.N.E. (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) volunteer educator.
